Bentonite

Discovery of Bentonite

Bentonite was first recommended in the 19th century by an American geologist named Knight. After he found this mineral in the form of deposits in the water near Benton Castle, he called it mineral soap. Also, several years before that, a type of bentonite was identified and studied in the Montmorillon region of France, and as a result, this material was also called montmorillonite. However, whatever the name, this type of useful clay has always been used by humans. Even in the Fort Benton area, bentonite was used for washing clothes by the natives of the area for many years before it was discovered by an American geologist. Until 30 years after the discovery of bentonite, this substance and its uses remained almost unknown. Strong interest in bentonite consumption began in the twenties of the last century.

The currently used name for bentonite also dates back to the same years when researchers “Ross and Shannon” applied this name to a range of clay types that were created by the decomposition of volcanic ash and contain large amounts of the mineral montmorillonite and a smaller amount. Other minerals such as quartz, feldspar, iron sulfide, and calcite were added.

Introduction of bentonite

Bentonite is one of the most widely used mineral materials in various industries, and due to its properties and capabilities, its scope of application is increasing. Bentonite has been used as shampoo clay for washing in the past due to its cleansing properties. But today, scientists have realized the extraordinary properties of this mineral through research. Types of bentonite are divided into different types according to the type of application and industry. The most important of them are the following:

Bentonite

Sodium bentonite

This type is used in sand casting, pellet making, and especially drilling industries. This type of mineral has a large amount of sodium in its structure and is able to absorb a large amount of water. In such a way its weight can increase up to 15 times its initial weight by absorbing water.

Calcium bentonite

This substance has an alkaline property with a pH of about 9. Compared to sodium samples, this mineral does not swell very much, but it contains moisture and fat. This mineral is used in sand casting, fat absorbent, especially oils and greases, animal feed purification, hygiene, and skin detoxification.

Properties

Bentonite contains 85% of montmorillonite clay. This clay is fine-grained and has different properties and characteristics. Clay is known as the main rock of bentonite. These rocks are mainly formed near volcanic mountains due to the eruption and pressure of the underlying layers. As a clay shampoo, it is composed of two tetrahedral layers and one three-dimensional layer. Most quadrilateral structures are pyramids. where one silicon atom is surrounded by four oxygen atoms. The central element in octagonal structures is mainly aluminum. Octahedral structures and tetrahedral structures are usually connected through oxygen in the tetrahedral plane.

Because there are no strong covalent bonds between the layers of bentonite, the plates that make up the shampoo clay slide over each other. Bentonite physically looks greasy. Among other properties and characteristics of this material, the following can be mentioned:

  • Very good adhesion
  • The ability to absorb a large amount of water
  • Softness
  • Kneading
  • Bloating
  • Ionic expansion and contraction
  • Increased strength
  • Elimination of unpleasant odors
  • Color cleaning
Applications of bentonite

Oil and gas industries

As mentioned, sodium bentonite is commonly used in the oil and gas industry to drill oil wells. Bentonite can prevent oil and gas from passing through the wall due to its very favorable swelling property. On the other hand, the viscosity required in the drill is provided by the viscosity of bentonite, and the waste discharge operation is performed much better.

Pelletizing

The adhesive property of this mineral makes the pelletizing operation of iron ore concentrate more favorable. For this purpose, bentonite is combined with iron concentrate and poured into special machines, and balls are formed due to the centrifugal force in the machine.

Casting

The use of sand molds has become a common method of metal casting due to its availability, reasonable price, and recyclability. These molds allow the metal to rest and cool in the sand mold. After the metal is cooled, the sand mold is broken and the molded metal is removed. Bentonite and water should be used to restore sand molds.

Pharmaceutical industry

In the pharmaceutical industry, this substance is used to stabilize and purify manufactured drugs. Medicinal bentonite powder is mostly very fine and odorless.

Detergent industry

Montmorillonite is used in industry to prevent material from settling. The softness of this mineral makes detergents more delicate.

Cat litter bentonite

Choosing the right cat litter is essential for maintaining a clean and healthy environment for both you and your feline companion. Bentonite cat litter offers numerous benefits, including superior odor control, excellent clumping ability, low dust and tracking, cost-effectiveness, and environmental friendliness. By investing in this high-quality litter, you can ensure your cat’s comfort while enjoying a cleaner and more convenient litter box experience. Kane Ara is able to produce grinded and granule cat litter bentonite in different packing.

Food industry

Bentonite has various applications in various industrial sectors. Bentonite is used as a food supplement for animals, which often has many uses due to the property of absorbing toxins and sticking pellets, improving the conversion factor, and buffering properties.

fertilizer industry

Bentonite has a great effect in increasing the yield of agricultural and horticultural crops and soil productivity, as well as saving the consumption of chemical fertilizers, water, and optimal use of animal manure.

Pellet industry

The role of bentonite is in pelletizing for steel and iron production. First, sodium bentonite is mixed with crushed iron ore, and using centrifugal force, these materials are made into pea seeds, which are called pellets.

Drilling Industry

Bentonite has been used as a drilling mud since about 70 years ago due to its reliability and Ceylon standard in high concentrations and its sealing power due to swelling.
